What creature is better to discuss on Halloween than the zombie? Of Haitian and West African origin, the zombie has certainly seen a popularity boom in recent years.
There is another reason zombies are appropriate to talk about now, and that is the current political climate. Among other things, zombies are thought to represent fears of the aristocracy of the hoarding masses rising up. (Vampires, in contrast, can be seen to represent the fears of the common man of the powerful, “blood-sucking” aristocracy.)
When I ask myself what zombies can teach us about happiness, I think of empathy. It is tempting to see those whose views oppose ours as something “other,” something less than human. It is easy to try to find a scapegoat for our anger, and often that scapegoat is the group of people we align with the least. It’s only so easy to see those groups we disagree with as a thoughtless hoard consuming all that we feel is good in the world.
Truthfully, though? We are all scared. We all feel helpless. We are all looking for solutions, and none of us are right one hundred percent of the time. Who do you see as the “zombies” in your life? Are they working class Americans? Are they BLM protesters? Baby boomers? Millennials? Are they the 99 percent? The one percent? Are they those who support the opposite political party as you? Maybe today is the day to try to learn something new about those you view as “other.” After all, what better day than Halloween to confront your scariest monster and realize there is a human being underneath?
I’ve got a few weeks left in the Creatures and Happiness series. Is there a creature you would like to see me cover that I haven’t covered yet?

My association to zombies is when I’ve gone thru day after day at work drained of energy, hope and soul. Needless to say I’ve left those jobs…but a lot of people stay in jobs like that, either because they have to for money or they just don’t know another way. So when I think of zombies I think of people who are “walking dead” and not connected to their life purpose. When I’ve been depressed I’ve also felt like a zombie. Interesting to hear a little bit about the mythology of zombies, too, especially socio-economic theories…

You just reminded me; there’s actually been another study that researched trends between interest in zombies and economic recessions/depressions; the idea being that we all feel a little dead inside when we have no economic control. So, that’s totally legit.

So cool! Is there an online article that you found about it? Where do you do your research? I’m super interested in this kind of stuff.

My go-to-book of choice is called The Encyclopedia of Fantasy by John Clute and John Grant. It’s got a lot of basic info on symbolism etc. I found out about the zombie study from a coworker who went to Clemson; http://alivetampabay.com/people-and-places/qa-with-zombie-scholar-sarah-juliet-lauro/ A link to a Q and A with the scholar who did the research. Wikipedia can also serve as a good launching point, I will read their overviews and then click on the related links and references for more info. And lots of just… getting lost on the internet, and in random books, to be honest. Fantasy author biographies and interviews, too.

Thanks for the thorough information!! I can imagine a lot of your knowledge comes from getting lost in books and the internet…but I’ll have to check out the Encyclopedia of Fantasy, that looks awesome. That interview you linked to is really interesting! It’s interesting to ground these “myths” in history…thanks again!

When I see zombies in movies and TV shows it’s hard for me to separate them from “real people.” Like I feel really bad when they get ripped apart or whatever happens to them. Hopefully that means I have a bit of empathy. Of course I am MORE sad when a human dies!

I feel bad too! I love the movie Warm Bodies and the shows In the Flesh and iZombie because they tell the zombies’ point of view.
